#5502 - Dinky Toys - Bedford - Military Flatbed Truck (export model)

Reference Dinky Toys ( Great Britain ) : 25 VW

Standalone item -

Model status: 4.2

The Bedford O-type, launched by Vauxhall's subsidiary in the late 1930s, was one of the most common medium-duty trucks in post-war Britain, recognizable by its prominent hood and vertical grille. Meccano cast this Bedford O flatbed body with drop sides from the late 1940s for its civilian version (25w). After the war, Dinky Toys relaunched its vast range of British utility vehicles, including the Bedford trucks with forward-control cab, the famous "O" type. Grouped in the 25 series, these utility vehicles were renumbered in the 400 series in 1954. The flatbed version held a prominent place, a faithful companion to farmyards and miniature warehouses. The model offered corresponds to the dark olive green monochrome variant, open drop-side flatbed, with cast zamak wheels painted to match the body color (green-painted ridged hubs) and smooth black tires. This dark shade, close to a military olive, is significantly less common than the standard light green, making it a sober and infrequent variation! Indeed, this military version was made only for export: the Liverpool firm had produced a version painted in military green (olive drab): this is the 25wm, distributed around 1952-1955, then renumbered 640. The grille here is painted to match the body color, unlike the civilian finishes with silver and black grilles. This model was never sold in France or the United Kingdom: it was part of a small group of five civilian Dinky models repainted in military colors intended exclusively for the American market, sold across the Atlantic by the US distributor. A further particularity is that it was not sold in individual boxes but presented in a trade box of four copies. This will help to better understand the presence of some small scattered discrete chips. This limited and distant distribution makes it today a rare variant on this side of the Atlantic, which adds to its interest for the collector. You have to know how to appreciate this type of piece, offered here entirely original. It was when looking at the photos that I realized that a tire was missing... it must be said that this vehicle crossed the Atlantic twice! I will be happy to offer one to the person who buys this model!
