Model status: 4.8

Description: This model is extremely interesting. Indeed, we are in the late 1950s, and Dinky Toys France had begun a policy of opening up to foreign markets. Thus, after releasing the Mercedes 190 SL, Meccano and Bobigny decided to produce this Volkswagen Karmann Ghia, which combines German taste with a very Italian style. It's undeniable! For the record, there were pre-series models without windows and with a smooth roof. However, like most other models in the 24 series, this model would be produced with interior glazing and a checkered roof. The model we are offering here corresponds to the very first version, which was released in 1959 with a very pronounced wing indentation. It is therefore obviously equipped with convex rims fitted with white tires (original!). It should be noted that a second version would quickly appear with a less pronounced curve between the wings and the bonnet, in 1960. At that time, the model would be renumbered 530. The third version would keep the same less pronounced front, but with concave rims. Production in France would stop in 1962. Another little anecdote is that this model would share a common point with the Alfa-Romeo reference 24 J. Indeed, it would also be produced in England! Obviously, the Liverpool version would have a "Made in England" base plate, and would benefit from specific suspensions and rims and tires, but also two different colors! It should be noted that the English version only exists with the second mold! We can therefore imagine that Bobigny wanted to keep its mold for a certain time before agreeing to send it across the Channel! The best proof is that the model was announced in the English catalog of 1959... whereas it would only be produced much later, since the English would use the second mold! To return to our model, it is in superb condition! The paint is a little grainy... but you have to get used to it! This is the case on almost all models produced in the late 1950s, and particularly those with the color red. To be perfectly honest, having this type of model with smooth paint would be rather suspicious! The model presents extremely well. The rims have impeccable chrome. The shiny chassis is in tune. The box is complete. Apart from a slight pencil graffiti and a small wear on a flap edge, it has been extremely well preserved, it is well formed. Superb set!
