Description: In the flurry of post-war Japanese toy workshops, efficiency took precedence over faithfulness. To appeal to young Westerners, toys had to be recognizable at first glance, and what could be more distinctive than the vertical grille of the 1958 Ford Edsel? This feature, which partly contributed to the spectacular commercial failure of the real car, became its greatest strength when caricatured on the lithographed tinplate of a bazaar toy. This is how this Yellow Cab taxi was born, a stylized American evocation produced without a license. To suit all budgets, manufacturers offered it in two versions: one, basic, with free-wheeling, and the other, more dynamic, with a friction motor. Our model belongs to the first, simpler category. Its yellow body with a red roof, sound and complete, has retained vibrant colors despite scratches testifying to many imaginary races. The bare tin-plated chassis, typical of these economical productions, is slightly tarnished, and the four black wheels are present. Rated 4.5/5, this taxi is an endearing survivor, sold without its original box. One can easily imagine a shop manager hastily jotting down the code "331 16 LUI" under the car, little suspecting that this simple stock mark would one day become a sign of authenticity.
