Description: Before the age of zamak and modern plastic, celluloid was the king of French toys: lightweight, colorful, and inexpensive, it reigned from the 1930s to the 1950s before being banned in 1964 due to its flammability. From this bygone era comes this small milk truck from the brand Cellulo, a now little-known French manufacturer, which belongs to pre-war production—a segment where celluloid utility vehicles were rare. The toy does not copy any specific model but beautifully evokes the aerodynamic French sedans of the mid-1930s, with a pointed grille and flowing fenders in the manner of the Peugeot 302/402, here reinterpreted as a milk delivery van. This version is interesting because it is mechanical. However, French production of mechanical celluloid toys was very limited before the war: mechanical versions were rare. It was mainly after the war that manufacturers reused old molds to motorize them and relaunch their production... until the end of the 1950s. So, with an identical mold, this mechanical livery seems to have been produced just after the war using the mold designed by Cellulo before the war. Its charm lies in the details: the light brown hue, the grille and headlights highlighted with silver, and especially the rear tray with holes designed to hold milk cans, which are missing here. The whole thing alone tells the story of the neighborhood delivery man. Measuring 12.7 cm, or approximately a 1/41st scale, it offers a nice presence for such a delicate material. It bears the marks of its age—the rear axle slightly bent, as is often the case with these fragile celluloids—but retains beautiful colors and all its old charm. A pre-war curiosity, a testament to a toy craft that has now disappeared: to be snapped up by collectors of rare pieces.
